For its regular frequenters, the North Shore is dotted with quintessential shopping villages that give the area its quiet, leafy name. Philip Mall in West Pymble is one of them.

And Brick Lane Espresso is one of its more recent additions. Run by a friendly Italian with an infectious nature to boot, this café is sure to be your next stop for a healthy caffeine fix, a lazy brunch or a wine with lunch.

Hailing from the Veneto region of northern Italy, owner Andrea Manfe has grown to love the North Shore - an area he now calls home.

“I started catering school in Italy, then I travelled and worked in hospitality until I landed in Australia,” Manfe said.

And he loves his coffee (surprisingly, not the Italian blend). After spending twelve years learning the art of roasting, he kick-started his own roasting company before moving on to open a refined espresso bar in Hornsby. Brick Lane Espresso came next in August, 2015.

Inside, modern café décor is blended with subtle Italian flair. Walk in and you’ll find Manfe or his brother behind the coffee machine. Behind him, an exposed brick wall meets a polished concrete counter and an open kitchen. Turn the corner and a retro-inspired green couch is dotted with red chairs.

This approach is echoed in the food, which Manfe calls “Australian café flair with a slight Mediterranean influence”. Traditional breakfasts are coupled with “a few quirky, unusual dishes” such as polenta and curry eggs with smoked salmon bruschetta (and a glass of ‘Sensi’ Pinot Grigio) faring well for lunch.

With quality, 100 percent Arabica coffee, outdoor seating aside a playground for the kids and abundant parking, what’s not to love?
