28-Jun-2017
Written by Luke Nolan-Harris
Meet Des Harris, our one-of-a-kind photographer.

Des is an award winning photographer with a 30 year background in photojournalism, corporate and architecture photography. Having spent many years in Europe working in and managing commercial photographic studios and after a 3 year stint in Paris, Des is a welcomed addition to the MB Creative team. His contemporary quirky style is quick to adapt to the needs of the individual. Des believes that the photographic business should be fun as well as challenging and technically perfect. We all love his work here at McConnell Bourn and are sure you will too.

Have you always been in real estate? If no, what’s your background?
No. I trained as a professional actor & pursued that as a career for 20 years, to this day I still dabble in community theatre when I can. Otherwise I’ve been a door-to-door salesman, and when it comes to photography I’ve done everything from theatre & film stills where I’d photograph many celebrities. I’ve also done photography for press which has exposed me to many interesting stories.

Do you have a favourite shoot that you’ve done?
That’s waayyyyy too difficult… I can’t boil it down to a shoot. But the doors that have opened and people I have met throughout my 35 years of being a professional photographer have created indelible memories.

So as we know from your work background that you have worked with a number of “well-known” celebrities, who was your favourite to work with?
David Bowie was probably the friendliest celebrity I’ve ever worked with. I’ve had great banter with Bill Murray & Bob Hoskins, I’ve shadowed Hillary Clinton. But Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, whom we named our daughter after, was the only one whose autograph I asked for.

If you could do a photoshoot with one person, dead or alive, who would you choose?
Marilyn Monroe (no comment necessary).

So, why real estate?
I love architecture. I have a penchant for straight lines and symmetry.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?
Positive feedback, it’s like a round of applause to an actor.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at work?
It always has to be fun, otherwise they’d call it work! Oh.. wait… But really I love the rapport and camaraderie with my colleagues - that always brightens my day.

What are three things you couldn’t live without?
Coffee, my camera, and the ocean.

Where is your favourite place in the world? Whether it’s your couch at home or a cafe?
But there are so many places to choose from! I like different places for different things. But if I had to choose I’d say India & Nepal because they presented me with the most culturally challenging issues & some of the most rewarding experiences.

Do you have a secret talent? If so, what is it??
Fire eating and breathing.

What do you love most about MB?
I love the fact that we are a progressive company, are always thinking outside of the square and we never stop learning or trying new things.
